A Good Reputation (2025) is an “improvised fiction” film shot in Calabria with non-actor Giulia Vittoria Maione, Rosa’s second cousin by marriage, and professional actor Mackenzie Davis, a longtime friend of Rosa’s, who has established herself as a lead in television and cinema. In the first ten minutes of the film, we see looped footage of a descent into a darkened entrance stairwell, overlaid with a conversation between Rosa and Giulia. Giulia, who has just moved into Rosa’s passed grandmother’s apart- ment, is giving Rosa a detailed rundown of the local gossip. The man who lives downstairs, a figure who is never seen, is invoked through Giulia’s storytelling and through the half-open doors shown in the looped footage. Here, community is connected by people’s perceptions of one another. A good or bad reputation is a result of how you are viewed, and the ways in which people talk about you when you’re out of sight. -Yaniya Lee
