I Vattienti di Nocera Terinese (2025)
16'

Nocera Terinese, Calabria, is one of three southern Italian towns that practices the Holy Saturday ritual of the Vattienti or flagellants. Particular to this iteration is the use of the Rose and Thistle tools, or, la Rosa e il Cardo. The first is a smooth cork disk with which the participant’s skin is struck repeatedly to prepare it for bleeding, the second is a cork disk embedded with 13 pieces of very fine glass. The Vattienti are physically tied to a second man Acciumu via a rope or leash. The men parade through the town, striking their legs in a public display of guilt, and visit the churches and other locations of personal importance, such as their homes and businesses, staining the doors with blood. At various stations, wine is poured on their legs to disinfect the wounds.
